Ingredients
Scale
Beef and Coating
- 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
Sauce and Vegetables
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef: Pat the sliced beef dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Toss the beef slices in a bowl with the cornstarch, ensuring each piece is evenly coated. This helps create a slightly crispy texture when cooked.
- Cook the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Arrange the beef in a single layer and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until browned and slightly crispy. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside to keep warm.
- Sauté Aromatics: Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan. Sauté the minced garlic and grated ginger for about 30 seconds or until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
- Create the Sauce: Stir in the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, crushed red pepper flakes, and water. Bring this mixture to a gentle simmer to combine all the flavors.
- Cook the Vegetables: Add the sliced red bell pepper and broccoli florets to the simmering sauce. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are tender yet still crisp, preserving their bright color and crunch.
- Combine Beef and Sauce: Return the cooked beef to the pan and toss well to coat evenly with the sticky sauce. Let it simmer together for an additional 2 to 3 minutes so the sauce thickens and clings to the beef.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving. This dish is delicious served over steamed rice or noodles.
Notes
- For extra heat, increase the crushed red pepper flakes or add a drizzle of chili oil.
- You can substitute chicken or tofu if you prefer a different protein.
- Serve over steamed rice or noodles to make it a complete meal.
- Make sure to slice the beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.
