Description

This Sticky Hoisin Beef recipe features tender, thinly sliced beef coated in a glossy, flavorful hoisin-based sauce with crunchy bell peppers and broccoli. Quick and easy to prepare on the stovetop, it’s perfect for a satisfying weeknight dinner that combines savory, sweet, and tangy Asian-inspired flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Coating

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided

Sauce and Vegetables

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Pat the sliced beef dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Toss the beef slices in a bowl with the cornstarch, ensuring each piece is evenly coated. This helps create a slightly crispy texture when cooked.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Arrange the beef in a single layer and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until browned and slightly crispy. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside to keep warm.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan. Sauté the minced garlic and grated ginger for about 30 seconds or until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
  4. Create the Sauce: Stir in the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, crushed red pepper flakes, and water. Bring this mixture to a gentle simmer to combine all the flavors.
  5. Cook the Vegetables: Add the sliced red bell pepper and broccoli florets to the simmering sauce. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are tender yet still crisp, preserving their bright color and crunch.
  6. Combine Beef and Sauce: Return the cooked beef to the pan and toss well to coat evenly with the sticky sauce. Let it simmer together for an additional 2 to 3 minutes so the sauce thickens and clings to the beef.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving. This dish is delicious served over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra heat, increase the crushed red pepper flakes or add a drizzle of chili oil.
  • You can substitute chicken or tofu if you prefer a different protein.
  • Serve over steamed rice or noodles to make it a complete meal.
  • Make sure to slice the beef thinly against the grain for tenderness.
