Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground Italian sausage until browned, making sure to break it up as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and the onions are softened.
  4. Add Sauce and Seasoning: Stir in the pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes if using. Let the mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes to combine flavors.
  5. Prepare Baking Dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread half of the tater tots in an even layer on the bottom of the dish.
  6. Layer Meat and Cheese: Pour the meat mixture evenly over the tater tots, then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
