Description

These Chocolate Chip Snowball Cookies are a delightful twist on the classic snowball cookie, featuring mini chocolate chips folded into a buttery, tender dough. Rolled in powdered sugar twice for a snowy, festive appearance, they offer a perfect balance of sweetness and rich chocolate flavor, ideal for holiday gatherings or any cozy treat time.

Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips

For Rolling

  • Additional powdered sugar, for rolling

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup of unsalted butter and 1/2 cup of powdered sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Then add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and mix well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add in 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt, mixing just until the dough comes together and no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix to keep the cookies tender.
  3. Fold in Chocolate Chips: Stir in 3/4 cup of mini chocolate chips evenly through the dough to distribute the chocolate bits.
  4. Shape Cookies: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into 1-inch balls. Place these balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart to allow for slight spreading.
  5. Bake: Bake the cookies at 375°F (190°C) for 9 to 11 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly golden. The tops should remain pale and will not brown significantly.
  6. Cool and Roll in Powdered Sugar: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. While still warm, roll each cookie in powdered sugar to coat them evenly. Once completely cooled, roll them again for a second ‘snowy’ coating to complete the traditional look and sweetness.

Notes

  • Ensure butter is softened to room temperature for easier creaming and better texture.
  • Do not over-bake; cookies should be lightly golden on the bottom but pale on top to keep their delicate texture.
  • Double rolling in powdered sugar creates the classic snowball cookie appearance and enhances sweetness.
  • Mini chocolate chips work best for even distribution without overpowering the delicate dough.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week to maintain freshness.
