Ingredients
Scale
Churro Dough
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Dipping Sauce
- Chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Combine Water, Butter, and Salt: In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, and salt. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a rolling boil, making sure the butter is fully melted before the water boils.
- Add the Flour: Remove the saucepan from heat and add all the flour at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon or sturdy spatula until the dough forms a smooth ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Cool the Dough Slightly: Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl and let it cool for 5-10 minutes until it’s warm but not hot.
- Add the Eggs: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth, glossy, and well combined, even if it looks curdled at first.
- Add Vanilla Extract: Stir in the vanilla extract evenly throughout the dough.
- Transfer to Piping Bag: Place the dough in a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. If unavailable, use a large zip-top bag and cut off a corner.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Pipe the Churro Bites: Pipe small, 1-2 inch long churro bites directly into the air fryer basket, leaving space between each to prevent sticking.
- Air Fry: Cook for 6-8 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Watch carefully as cooking times may vary.
- Check for Doneness: Cut open a churro bite to ensure it is cooked inside and not doughy. If needed, cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Remove and Repeat: Transfer cooked churro bites to a wire rack to cool slightly. Repeat with remaining dough batches.
- Combine Sugar and Cinnamon: Mix granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a shallow dish until well combined.
- Coat the Churro Bites: While still warm, toss the churro bites in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.
- Serve Immediately: Enjoy the churro bites warm and crispy with your choice of dipping sauce for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, which ensures even cooking and crispiness.
- Pipe the churro bites directly into the air fryer basket carefully to maintain their shape and size.
- Allow the dough to cool slightly before adding eggs to prevent cooking the eggs prematurely.
- Serve churro bites immediately for optimal crunch; they can lose crispness if left to sit too long.
- Use a large star piping tip for the traditional churro ridges and texture.
